Ford Unleashes New Shelby GT500 Drop-Top

Ford celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Special Vehicle Team high-performance division at the Chicago Auto Show, first rolling out its initial SVT effort — a 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra, unveiled 20 years ago at the Chicago show.

The automaker also marked the anniversary by introducing its new 2013 Shelby GT500 Convertible. Under the hood of the high-performance drop-top is a 5.8-liter supercharged V-8 engine that generates 650 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Shelby GT500 Convertible gets a performance edge with new Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers and Brembo brake system. The Bilstein system, Ford reports, allows the Shelby GT500 to quickly adjust from a daily driver to a high-performance track car.

Fitted with the optional Performance Package, the convertible is reported to run nearly 3.5 seconds faster than the outgoing model.
