Ford's Energy Efficiency Efforts Earn Sixth ENERGY STAR Award

  • Ford Motor Company earned its sixth straight ENERGY STAR® Award for Sustained Excellence from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • Ford improved energy efficiency of its U.S. manufacturing facilities by 2 percent last year bringing Ford's 5-year improvement to more than 15 percent
  • Actions that contributed to Ford's energy savings include paint process improvements, retooling of manufacturing facilities with energy efficient equipment, and large scale lighting replacements
DEARBORN, Mich., March 17, 2011 – Ford Motor Company's actions to reduce the amount of energy used to manufacture vehicles and support its U.S. operations have earned it the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's coveted 2011 ENERGY STAR Award for the sixth consecutive year.

The 2011 ENERGY STAR Award for Sustained Excellence recognizes Ford's continued leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through energy efficiency.

In 2010, Ford improved energy efficiency in its U.S. manufacturing facilities by 2 percent bringing Ford's 5-year improvement to more than 15 percent. The cumulative improvement represents 1,875 million kilowatt hours (kWh) which is equivalent to the amount of energy required to power 60,000 average U.S. homes for a year. Ford establishes new baseline measures of energy efficiency – natural gas and electricity – every five years and normalizes for changes in production volume and weather.

“We are extremely proud of the steps we've taken to improve responsible use of natural resources," said Donna Inch, Chairman and CEO, Ford Land. "Energy efficiency is critical to running a strong and successful business, delivering both financial and environmental benefits."
Ford's energy efficiency improvements include:
  • Improved paint processes including implementation of the 3-Wet Paint Process and recirculation of air in paint spray booths. These process improvements eliminate bake ovens between paint booths, reduce paint booth footprint and reduce the amount of ventilation air that must be heated and humidified to paint a car. The energy savings per plant is approximately 35 million kWh annually
  • Retooled powertrain manufacturing facilities with energy efficient equipment and process changes including flexible machining, minimum quantity lubrication and elimination of heated parts washers
  • Improved metering at manufacturing facilities allows Ford to measure daily and weekly production and non-production energy use
  • Installation of energy efficient lighting systems at various Ford locations including a 50,000 light fixture upgrade in southeast Michigan that will reduce energy use by 18.2 million kWh and is expected to save Ford $1.3 million annually
  • Development and launch of a commonized sustainability measurement scale for all manufacturing plants worldwide. The scale evaluates performance in all areas of sustainability – energy, air quality, water, waste and others – and will be used to plan and measure future improvements
  • Installed a solar power generation system at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant delivering 500 kW of renewable energy which is integrated with 750-kW battery storage facility. This facility will help power the plant and production of Ford's new Focus, Focus Electric, next-generation hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles
In 2010, Ford earned nine ENERGY STAR Building Labels for efficiency improvements. Ford has launched a 5-year plan to obtain LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for a number of Dearborn-based office buildings.

"Ford has earned EPA’s highest ENERGY STAR award - the 2011 Sustained Excellence Award,” said Elizabeth Craig, Acting Director of EPA’s Office of Atmospheric Programs. “Ford’s long term leadership and commitment to energy efficiency demonstrates the types of accomplishments that we can all achieve in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting our global environment. We look forward to their continued partnership and leadership.”

New Focus To Get 28 In City, 40 On Highway

March 21st, 2011

Just in time for $4-a-gallon gasoline prices, the 2012 Ford Focus compact arrives as a handsome new model with head-turning fuel mileage, comfortable ride and luxury options not usually found in small cars.

The early-introduction Focus, available as a sedan and five-door hatchback, is rated at 28 miles a gallon in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway as a sedan with automatic transmission and an extra-cost Special Fuel Economy (SFE) package. Ford's Fiesta small car also has a 40-mpg highway rating.

The $495 SFE package on the Focus swaps out standard tires for low rolling resistance rubber, adds special wheel covers that are more aerodynamic than the regular ones and a spoiler at the sedan's trunk lid and puts a newfangled grille in front that can adjust air flow. All this boosts the mileage rating above that of the regular Focus sedan with automatic transmission mileage of 28/38-mpg.

Best of all, pricing for the Focus remains affordable. Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $16,995 for the base 2012 S sedan and $18,790 for a 2012 Focus SE hatchback. Both have the strong, 160-horsepower Focus engine and standard manual transmission.

The lowest starting retail price for a 2012 Focus sedan with automatic is $18,090, while a 2012 Focus hatchback with automatic, an SE model, starts at $19,885. The starting price for the fuel-miser Focus sedan, again with 160-horsepower engine, is $19,585.

Notably, Ford also offers an upscale version of Focus- with Titanium Premium Package - that adds luxury touches like six-way, power driver's seat, rear-seat center armrest with storage and rain-sensing wipers. Its starting MSRP, including destination charge, is $23,490, and the price can run beyond $26,000 with other options, such as navigation, added in.

Focus competitors include long-running compact car favorites, such as the Toyota Corolla, which starts at $16,360 for a base, 2011 sedan with 132-horsepower four cylinder and manual transmission. The Corolla only comes as a sedan.

The newly revamped 2011 Hyundai Elantra has been getting attention because it, too, has a government fuel mileage rating of 40 mpg on the highway, with 29 mpg rating in city driving. This is one mile a gallon higher than that of the new Focus.

Testing a 2012 Focus hatchback with Titanium package and other goodies, I didn't have to drive carefully to get noteworthy gasoline mileage of nearly 32 mpg in combined city/highway travel. And this wasn't the fuel miser version of Focus.

The test car impressed with its striking exterior style, which mixed elements of a European hatchback with Lexus cues like the slick headlights. It looked a bit more like a station wagon, albeit a stylish one, than a hatchback. And painted a Tuxedo Black metallic color, it got looks from some passersby.
Note the hatchback is some 6 inches shorter in length than the sedan.

Inside the test Focus, the optional interior style package provided seats that looked attractive with a mix of black and dark red leather pieces. The steering wheel with silver trim pieces even looked upscale.
As has become typical in Ford vehicles, a lot of technology is available, and it all seemed to be in the Focus Titanium hatchback.

I talked to get the sizable and colorful display atop the center of the dashboard to post the map. I talked to get a Bluetooth-enabled phone to dial my friend. I changed the radio channel by voice command. And the system eagerly offered suggestions when I didn't know what to say.

There were only a couple times when the MyFord Touch system, as it's called, couldn't understand what I said.

Once, for example, I must have enunciated the "p" sound at the end of the word "map" too much, because the system responded by telling me there was no USB connected. I learned it's best to talk naturally to this car.

Engine power came on pleasingly through Ford's PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission. I eased into traffic without fuss and while I could hear the four-cylinder at times when I accelerated hard, engine sounds were not harsh.

The 160 horses is more than the 132 in a Corolla and 148 in an Elantra. Torque, or low-end "oomph" in the Focus peaks at 146 foot-pounds at 4,450 rpm, so there's a steady progression of power and speed, not some quick thrust.

I enjoyed the ride and handling, which was tuned with help from Ford's German operations. The Focus rides stably and with agility and hews well to the road. It manages road bumps while providing good feedback to the driver. The electric power assist steering had a bit of an artificial feel, though.

Most Focuses sold will have the automatic transmission, but a five-speed manual is available. Interestingly, manual transmission Focus cars have a lower government fuel mileage rating - 26/36 mpg.
There's good legroom in the Focus front seats - more than 40 inches. And I appreciated that I could move the driver's seat up a good ways, heightwise, for comfortable views out.

But I still had to watch out and crane around the metal pillars at the sides of the windshield to see pedestrians in crosswalks as I made turns. Rear-side view also is blocked by the rear metal pillars aft of the back seats.

Back-seat legroom in the hatchback is a bit tight at 33.2 inches. But headroom of 37.9 inches is commendable.

The hatchback offers way more cargo room.

Cleared for Towing

There’s a lot to remember when you connect a trailer to your truck. Whether you tow only once in a while or daily, it’s easy to overlook one of the steps. That’s why Ford developed an industry-first Truck App to keep owners of F-150, Super Duty® and Raptor equipped with the new technology in the know when they tow. Like a pre-flight checklist, the Truck App asks a set of questions to help ensure that the trailer is connected properly.

With more than 50 percent of F-Series owners regularly towing a trailer, this is a feature that can aid quite a few truck owners. The Truck App is available on F-Series class-exclusive LCD instrument cluster screen, a beefier version of the driver information display where traditional information on fuel economy, vehicle settings and trip tracking are also displayed.

The checklist that your truck will walk you through includes:
  • Ball coupler connected and locked?
  • Tongue jack raised?
  • Mirrors adjusted?
  • Electrical wiring connected?
  • Lights functioning correctly (running lights, left/right turn and brake lights)?
  • Trailer Brake Controller gain setting adjusted?
  • Wheel chocks removed?
  • Safety chains connected?
For those who own multiple trailers, Truck App allows drivers to name each trailer and collect and store accumulated mileage for each – for up to 10 different trailers, displaying helpful information such as accumulated miles for a particular unit, trailer brake gain (with available integrated brake controller) and output.

The Truck App also caters to the off-road enthusiast with unique information screens such as pitch-and-roll, which shows the angle of surface incline, the degree of tilt and steering angle.

The app on the F-150 SVT Raptor includes a specific screen that shows the status of Hill Descent Control™, off-road mode and the 4×4 system.

In addition to the Truck App software application, the more traditional screen menus include:
  • Gauge mode – includes real-time transmission oil temperature
  • Trip A/B – includes trip time and mileage information and tracks two trips
  • Fuel economy – tracks fuel consumption history and offers selectable displays for efficiency in miles to empty, average and instantaneous
  • Settings – allows the customer to turn features on or off, change autolamp time, set trailer brake setting and monitor oil life
  • Information – provides management of the MyKey® feature, a system check screen and key system warnings for trailer sway control, Hill Descent Control and Tire Pressure Monitoring System
The F-150 productivity screen is standard on all FX2/FX4, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum models. It is also available on XLT as part of the XLT Convenience Package.

Fuel Economy is Automatic

March 15th, 2011

Fuel prices continue to rise, and Ford continues to raise the bar on fuel efficiencies. One surprising example of the company’s fuel efficient technology is the PowerShift transmission.

The PowerShift unit available in Ford Fiesta and Focus models is one of the most advanced transmissions available for subcompact and compact cars. Dual-clutch transmissions, like PowerShift, were born at the racetrack and saw their application for production road cars in ultra-expensive exotics, such as the $1.7 million Bugatti Veyron and $200,000 Ferrari California.

Among competitor vehicles in the Focus segment – Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta, Hyundai Elantra, Chevrolet Cruze and Nissan Sentra – none offers drivers more horsepower, faster acceleration and higher fuel economy with an automatic transmission. Plus, no other car in the Fiesta segment offers a six-speed automatic of any type.

PowerShift is part of a suite of advanced fuel-saving technologies available immediately on the Ford Fiesta and the all-new Focus, enabling both cars to deliver as much as 40 mpg on the highway.

How it Works

Unlike regular hydraulically operated automatic transmissions, which use power-sapping torque converters, wet clutches and pumps, the new dual-clutch Ford PowerShift automatic consists of two manual transmissions (in the same case) working in parallel. Each has its own independent clutch unit controlled by computers and fast-acting electromechanical actuators that shift the gears.

One clutch carries the odd gears, 1, 3 and 5, while the other carries the even gears, 2, 4 and 6, and reverse. PowerShift is an automatic because the gear changes are coordinated by a computer that directs the clutches to engage and disengage in a way that provides seamless delivery of torque to the wheels, even during gear changes.

As a result, the driver benefits from a 10 percent fuel economy gain along with the direct and sporty power-to-the-wheels feel and crisp acceleration normally associated with a manual gearbox, but in a transmission that shifts automatically.

Ford PowerShift advanced features include:
  • Torque Hole Fill: A Ford-developed and patented innovation that eliminates the slight hesitation drivers feel during acceleration when the transmission upshifts into a higher gear. PowerShift sends a smooth, seamless stream of torque to the wheels for uninterrupted acceleration
  • Hill Start Assist: If sensors detect the Fiesta or Focus on a slope of 5 degrees or more, Hill Start Assist automatically prevents the car from rolling backward in the instant when the driver moves his or her foot from the brake to the accelerator. The PowerShift computer controls the brake pressure and engine to hold the car in place.
  • Neutral idle: This feature helps improve fuel economy by eliminating the drag a traditional hydraulic transmission puts on the engine when a vehicle is idling.
  • Reduced weight: PowerShift weighs nearly 30 pounds less than the four-speed automatic transmission in the 2011 Focus. Less weight helps improve fuel economy
Ford engineers began developing the dual-clutch technology when advances in the speed of processors, memory and the mechanical actuators that shift the gears progressed to the point that a manual transmission could be made to perform as smoothly as an automatic.

More than 95 percent of new-car buyers purchase their vehicles with automatic transmissions, even though many prefer the crisper acceleration, sportier performance and higher fuel economy traditionally offered by manual transmissions. The Ford PowerShift dual dry-clutch transmission delivers the convenience of an automatic with the fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive sporty feel of a manual gearbox.

PowerShift is part of the Ford commitment to lead or be among the leaders in fuel economy in every segment in which the company competes. Ford offers six-speed transmissions in nearly its entire North American lineup of Ford and Lincoln brand luxury vehicles. Ford is the only automaker to offer North American vehicle buyers 12 sales segment fuel economy leaders, with four vehicles EPA-certified at 40 mpg or higher.

What Car Company Helps You Save Fuel?

March 11th, 2011

While more and more people are feeling the pinch at the gas pump, Ford is doing more to help drivers get the best fuel economy they can, and the company is continuing to introduce more fuel saving technology. Driving tools that coach people on reducing fuel consumption are available across several Ford gas-powered, hybrid-electric and all-electric vehicles and include EcoMode, MyFord Touch™ with EcoRoute, SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide and MyFord Mobile.

The suite of Ford green driving technologies enable consumers to modify their driving habits through coaching methods and rewards that encourage eco-friendly driving behaviors. By making simple adjustments in everyday driving habits – from rolling up windows when traveling more than 50 mph to staying on top of vehicle maintenance – consumers can increase their fuel efficiency while decreasing their impact on the environment and the cost of vehicle ownership. Additionally, safety features like Tire Pressure Monitoring
Systems further enhance fuel savings, reducing the average amount of fuel use 3 to 4 percent.
You can learn more about some of the Ford green driving technologies below.

EcoMode

EcoMode coaches consumers in the art of eco-driving using real-time feedback, while scoring and rewards are displayed on the instrument cluster. The software application generates a personalized driver operation scorecard by rating driver behavior that impacts fuel efficiency. Scores are displayed using an easy-to-follow five-leaf icon, with two leaves set as the default and five leaves being the maximum achievable score. Throughout a drive, the scoring system generates hints on how to gain more leaves by implementing eco-driving methods. It also allows drivers to review their generated score against the software’s optimized eco-driving patterns. Testing has shown a 24 percent fuel economy increase, on average.

MyFord Touch with EcoRoute

MyFord Touch provides drivers with real-time feedback on vehicle fuel efficiency and performance, helping coach drivers to maximize their miles per gallon. With the addition of EcoRoute, a map-based navigation system that instantly calculates the most fuel-efficient driving route, consumers are further empowered to control their fuel efficiency, with testing demonstrating fuel economy gains of up to 15 percent.

SmartGauge with EcoGuide

SmartGauge with EcoGuide is a unique instrument cluster specifically designed for hybrid vehicle owners. The technology creates a more connected driving experience, by coaching drivers to further maximize the fuel efficiency of their hybrid vehicle through real-time feedback and rewards. SmartGauge with EcoGuide features full-color LCD screens that can be configured to show different levels of information, including fuel and battery power levels, average and instant miles per gallon, and growing leaves and vines that track and reward the driver’s efficiency – more leaves and vines denote better driving habits.

MyFord Mobile

While electric cars are eco-friendly in their own right, the all-new MyFord Mobile app, exclusively for Focus Electric, helps extend eco-friendly driving behaviors by allowing consumers to make smart trip planning decisions that will extend the range of their vehicle, while also delivering driving behavior ratings ranging from Zen to zippy. Similar to SmartGauge with EcoGuide, Focus Electric also comes equipped with an instrument cluster display that uses blue butterflies to represent the surplus range beyond a charge point destination – the more butterflies there are, the greater the range and the better the driving habits.

Ford B-MAX Concept Vehicle Debuted

March 2nd, 2011

Geneva is the second largest city in Switzerland, and it’s known for fine watches, as well as being home to the headquarters of several European and global human-interest groups. But this week, it is the home of one of the largest auto shows in Europe. That is where Ford introduced the B-MAX concept vehicle, providing an early preview of exciting innovations in the European small-car market.

The B-MAX concept showcases a unique new body design which eliminates the traditional B pillar between the front and rear doors, and features twin rear sliding doors.  This innovative format – which has already been engineered for production – promises best-in-class access to the cabin, together with unmatched convenience and flexibility.

The innovation continues inside the cabin, where the interior offers exceptional space and versatility for such a compact vehicle.  The use of high quality materials highlights the vision that small, practical cars can also be comfortable and well-equipped.

The B-MAX concept combines the integrated B-pillar door format with a flexible and easy-to-use seating system, resulting in an interior which offers unmatched practicality and versatility.

Having folded the 60/40 split rear seats and the front passenger seat to create an extensive flat load floor, the side access is particularly convenient to load bulky items such as flat-pack furniture or even a bicycle.

With the front passenger seat folded, the interior is capable of holding exceptionally long loads.
The B-MAX concept is just 4.3 inches longer than the Fiesta five-door, and is approximately one foot shorter than the new C-MAX. With this highly compact footprint, the B-MAX concept is ideally placed to meet the fast-growing demand for downsized cars which are better suited to congested urban conditions, but without sacrificing interior space and comfort.

The B-MAX concept is powered by an ultra-low-CO2 powertrain, featuring a state-of-the-art three cylinder 1.0-liter Ford EcoBoost® gasoline engine. This EcoBoost engine is also equipped with the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system.

The three-cylinder Ford EcoBoost engine was first previewed in the Start concept vehicle displayed at the Beijing Motor Show in 2010, and represents the next addition to the global family of Ford EcoBoost engines. The 1.0-liter unit combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin independent variable cam timing to achieve significant reductions in fuel-consumption and CO2 emissions.

The 2011 Geneva Motor Show runs through March 13, 2011, and visitors can see the B-MAX concept as well as the latest Ford production vehicles.

Electric Vehicles and Cold Weather

If you’ve done much reading about electric vehicles, you’ll find that some people are pretty concerned about the ability of a battery-powered vehicle to operate in cold and snowy climates. We’d like to share some information with you on what Ford is doing to make sure that its battery-electric vehicles will give you less reason for worry than others.

“Batteries are similar to people, as they both achieve maximum performance working under moderate, unchanged temperatures,” said Sherif Marakby, Ford Director of Electrification Programs and Engineering. “Using a liquid-heated battery system allows Ford to keep the Focus Electric battery at a moderate temperature and improve performance whether you are charging or driving in a cold climate.”
Extreme temperatures can affect battery performance and reduce the range of electric vehicles. The range will not be impacted as much with a liquid-heated system compared to an air system. That’s why Ford will use an advanced active liquid-cooling and heating system to regulate the temperature of its lithium-ion battery packs, which are designed to operate under a range of ambient conditions.

“A liquid-heated battery can accept a charge faster from the regenerative braking that recaptures kinetic energy and sends it back to the battery, essentially providing longer range for the customer in real world cold weather conditions,” said Sherif. “Additionally, since acceleration in an electric vehicle comes from the power available in the battery, the customer will have more power available if the battery is warmer.”

The use of active liquid heating also enables owners of Focus Electric to automatically precondition battery pack temperature during daily recharging. While the vehicle is plugged in to the power grid, the vehicle system will be able to warm up the battery on cold days.

“Even when you’re parking in cold temperatures, as long as the vehicle is plugged in, you will warm up the battery,” explained Marakby. “Basically, customers will have the capability they need right off the bat. They won’t have to wait for the car to warm up.”

On cold days, heated liquid warms the batteries, gradually bringing the system’s temperature to a level that allows it to efficiently accept charge energy and provide enough discharge power to get good vehicle performance.

Electrification is an important piece of the overall Ford product sustainability strategy. The aggressive strategy includes five new electrified vehicles in North America by 2012 and Europe by 2013. Ford launched the Transit Connect Electric small commercial van in 2010 and in addition to Focus Electric in late 2011, will introduce C-MAX Hybrid, a second next-generation lithium-ion battery hybrid and the C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid in 2012.

Ford has launched an Electrified Vehicle Facebook page to serve as a place where passionate enthusiasts or curious consumers can find and share information about the company’s electrified vehicles. The page, available at facebook.com/FordElectricVehicles, is part of the Ford efforts to educate consumers on the variety of choices available with electrified vehicles and what the company is doing to make an electric lifestyle as easy as possible.

The Ford Electrified Vehicle page for Facebook was developed to help consumers understand the differences between electric-vehicle technologies so they can make informed decisions about whether a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or all-electric vehicle fits their driving habits. The page also creates a place where consumers can initiate and participate in conversations around Ford’s electrified vehicle offerings and gives Ford a forum to respond to consumers who are interested in electrified vehicles.

We’re all feeling the pinch at the pump, and predictions are for the summer of 2011  to see higher fuel prices yet. In light of that, here’s some news that brighten your day: Ford offers 12 vehicles that lead their sales segments in fuel economy, and that includes four with EPA-certified 40 mpg or higher fuel economy ratings.
Many new Ford and Lincoln vehicles feature improved aerodynamics and fuel-saving technologies including PowerShift, a Ford-designed dry dual-clutch automatic transmission available in the Ford Fiesta and all-new Focus, six-speed automatic transmissions, electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) and EcoBoost engines that save on fuel with no compromise to driving excitement.
The newest Ford vehicle in the fuel economy winner’s circle is the all-new Focus SFE, which was recently EPA certified at 40 mpg highway and 28 mpg city. Focus joins the 41 mpg city Fusion Hybrid and 40 mpg highway Fiesta in achieving over 40 mpg.
In addition, Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in America with its 41 mpg city EPA-certified rating, helping make Ford and Lincoln vehicles the most fuel efficient in the company’s 107-year history.
More Ford fuel economy stars include:
  • Ford Mustang V6: Its high-revving 305-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic deliver best-in-class highway fuel economy of 31 mpg; Mustang V6 is the first car in history to deliver the combination of 300-plus horsepower and more than 30 mpg
  • Ford F-150: Its 302-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic deliver a best-in-class 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway – an EPA rating Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra can’t top. The 3.7-liter V6 is one of four all-new truck engines in the 2011 F-150 lineup
  • Ford Fiesta: The combination of a 120-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder and available six-speed dual-clutch PowerShift automatic transmission delivers 40 mpg on the highway, topping Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit by 4 mpg and 5 mpg, respectively
  • Ford Super Duty®: The Ford-designed and Ford-built 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine delivers as much as 20 percent better fuel economy than the 6.4-liter it replaced. The new Power Stroke isn’t just fuel efficient, it’s also the most powerful diesel pickup engine money can buy, rated at 400 horsepower and 800 lb.-ft. of torque
  • Ford Edge: With its 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic, Edge delivers 19 mpg city and a best-in-class 27 mpg highway. The upcoming 2.0-liter EcoBoost® engine in the 2012 Edge is expected to deliver even greater economy
  • Ford Fusion Hybrid remains America’s most fuel-efficient midsize family sedan, topping the Toyota Camry Hybrid by 10 mpg in the city, according to the EPA
  • Ford Escape Hybrid, Transit Connect, Ranger and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid also lead their segments with the highest fuel economy
Customers continue to get the benefits of largest-ever Ford investment in fuel-efficient powertrains. In 2010, Ford launched nine new engines and six new six-speed transmissions. The company is on track to deliver fuel-saving six-speed transmissions across most of its lineup of Ford and Lincoln brand vehicles by 2013.
